Designing with Arched Windows

by Janice

Many homeowners are faced with a few challenges when they have a specialty-shaped window, but the aesthetic beauty that shows in both the interior and exterior of the home can hardly be outmatched.

Generally speaking, the geometry of graceful arches adds quite a bit of charm and character within a room, but they tend to falter in the form of privacy.

So, how do you deal with six arches in one room?  My client had just that predicament, and not only did she have arches a-plenty, but the windows themselves were an extra-large height of 160 inches!

She desperately needed window coverings, but wanted to highlight the appeal of the arches, manage the sun’s exceptionally bright afternoon rays, provide privacy in the living room, and address energy efficiency.

During the consultation process, we had several options to choose from that would fit all of this particular homeowner’s needs.  After contemplating Silhouettes or Pirouettes, the final solution was to go with shutters.

The classic look of the Heritance Hardwood Shutters, which are available in a wide range of easily matched whites, was a perfect complement to the existing traditional décor.  The color we chose even matches to the Benjamin Moore paint chosen for the trim and baseboards, creating an even more cohesive look within the room!

After deciding on shutters, there were still many design considerations to discuss to properly cover the uniquely shaped windows, as there are many style and functionality options to choose from!

Common arch dressings, particularly those with shutters, come in a traditional sunburst arch, or an arched-top shutter.  The sunburst appears as it sounds – like rays of light splaying outward from a central point in the middle of the arch’s base.  The arched-top shutter looks as though the main window’s shutters continued into the arch.  The arch-top shutter still has the horizontal louvers that tie in seamlessly with the main window treatments as the design continues to draw the eyes upward.

When you have full arches and half arches on the same wall of windows, like my client had, you need to decide on which configuration to use for each individual arch.  For this particular living room space, the decision was to go with a combination!   The sunburst arches are striking within the full arches, and the half arches placed on either side continue to elongate the main windows with their arched-top shutters.

The final result was gorgeous!  The Heritance Hardwood shutters provided a finished look that accented the décor, managed the light and privacy, and provided a solution for the amount of UV rays that entered the space, allowing for maximum insulation and energy efficiency.  The room was transformed into a grand space that welcomed family members and visitors to come and relax.
